March visited the first day of Spring upon us. Then there came Earth Day on April 22. May flowers are already in bloom. Climate, population growth, resource allocation and more seems to be just as much at the forefront as Mother Nature's movements. So when the new 94-Ah 2017 BMW i3 earned the inaugural 2017 World Urban Car moniker at the 2017 New York International Auto Show on April 12 of this year, it certainly seemed fitting. After all, it's a prime example of the BMW Group’s ongoing commitment to sustainable travel, being the automaker's first all-electric carbon fiber vehicle.

The idea behind BMW i3 when it launched in 2014 was to create a Mega City Vehicle, one capable of cutting across the dense population centers that are even now forming on the horizon. And today, in 2017, the eponymous BMW model is already showing its prowess for the purpose, offering a cruising range befitting a distance traveler as well as the dynamic performance to get one there.

Perhaps most importantly, BMW i3 entered 2017 with a 50% increase in battery capacity. That means up to 33 kilowatt-hours, thanks to higher lithium-ion cell energy density. BMW even kept the car's battery dimensions unchanged for space efficiency. And with a 170-horsepower AC synchronous electric motor, i3 promises sporty acceleration from zero to 60 mph in a little more than 7 seconds.

Charging i3 is simpler than ever, too, with BMW i now offering BMW Home Charger Connect capability. The automaker's power station enables convenient at-home charging with a host of connected functionality, and it has even begun installing such stations in national parks, with a premier showing in Thomas Edison National Historical Park. Such seems a definition of travel-friendliness if ever there was one.

And how will electric vehicles progress in the near future? For this, we'll have to stay tuned – and keep an eye on the development of life in the city, of course. But that doesn't mean we can't get charged up about it. Stop by and see us today here at BMW of Montgomery from Millbrook, Prattville, Birmingham, and Auburn, and we'll put you in the driver's seat of a BMW 3 Series, 5 Series, or 7 Series sedan, among your choice of others, to show you the definition of functional efficiency. We look forward to meeting you!
