At the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show, BMW turned more than a few heads. The April 19 event saw the unveiling of the first-ever BMW M4 CS, arriving at U.S. dealerships in 2018, and if the vehicle's performance specs are any indication, it needn't do much proving of its supercar prowess.

At first glance, the sportster shows off its aerodynamic qualities, with a front apron showcasing large, three-section air intakes, and beyond, a front end accented by twin LED headlights. These are flanked by eye-catching elements like a model-specific carbon-fiber front splitter, BMW M4 GTS-style rear diffuser and exposed carbon-fiber Gurney trunk spoiler lip. And a long CFRP hood atop sprawling wheel arches ought surely to make the Special-Edition M4 CS appeal to the muscle car segment. The road warrior even has its share of creature comforts and amenities to impress, from a driver-centric interior showing off lightweight M sports seats with leather and Alcantara trims, to automatic climate control, navigation, and the drive-time entertainment afforded by an acoustic-optimized BMW HiFi audio system.

But consider the possibilities of a high-output TwinPower Turbo 3.0-liter engine, 454 horsepower pushing 442 pound-feet of torque, and one's inner Formula 1 racer begins feeling its metaphorical oats. Just imagine what it could mean for a joy ride around Millbrook, Prattville, Birmingham or Auburn!

In fact, BMW M4 CS recently took its chops to a Nurburgring Nordschleife lap, where it boasted an ultra-low 7 minutes and 38 seconds. This, plus a top speed of 174 mph achievable quickly beyond the car's preliminary zero to 60 mph in as little as 3.8 seconds, makes it no small wonder that M4 CS earns the supercar moniker.

And when one factors in a host of handling and safety tech under the hood, it appears much came together to make the beast possible. M4 CS offers an oil cooler-equipped, 7-speed M Double Clutch Transmission that simplifies razor-precise gear adjustment without power interruption. Amazingly, that's possible whether you're shifting hands-on in manual or cruising along smoothly via automatic, and whether you're making the change via steering wheel-mounted shift paddles or the center gearshift lever. BMW M specially tuned Dynamic Stability Control, Adaptive M Suspension, and M Servotronic steering likewise come together for stable maneuvering with increased dynamic range atop road or down the track.

A highlight of M4 CS capability is its Active M Differential, making possible a drive experience customized to road conditions and handling preferences alike. Comfort mode tackles the vicissitudes of the everyday commute, while Sport mode takes curves across the landscape with reliability. Sport+ mode takes the top of the line as pertains controlling M4 CS, optimizing each of the car's systems for track-worthy dynamics. But BMW keeps a balanced ride in mind as well, M Dynamic Mode combining electronic assistance to keep Dynamic Stability Control ready during drifts for control on which you can rely.
